Bearing materials for plain bearings

Bronze Bearing & Babbitt Metal

The plain bearing forms the interface between the rotating and static components of a machine. The shaft is only separated from the bearing by an oil film a few hundredths of a millimeter thick. The materials in a plain bearing can be very different. As a rule, they are bronze bearings or so-called white metal bearings with a running surface made of tin-based alloy, which is particularly suitable as a bearing material . We offer various materials for plain bearings for a wide range of applications.

For perfect function in the radial bearing

Radial bearings are always used when radial forces need to be transmitted. The rotation of the shaft causes a hydrodynamically acting plain bearing to automatically build up a so-called lubrication wedge. Ideally, the shaft and bearing are completely separated. In the case of hydrostatic bearings, the shaft is lifted by a high-pressure lubricant supply. It is also important that the bearing materials ensure sufficient strength to absorb the resulting forces. In many cases, either high tin or lead bearing metal ( Babbitt metal ) or bronze is used.

Bronze bearing

This Plain bearing material is available in different variants. Its use has numerous advantages. It can be used for demanding bearings with a high load-bearing capacity. It is also very temperature-resistant and can be used in difficult or heavily contaminated environments. A bronze bearing is also characterized by high impact resistance. Grooves facilitate the targeted supply of lubricants, among other things. A bronze bearing is even suitable as a plain bearing material if oscillating swivel or linear movements have to be accommodated by the bearing supports.

White metal Babbitt Metal

With the so-called bearing metal are usually materials based on lead or tin. These  Bearing materials are also known as white metals . We offer Babbitt Metal in various designs for a wide range of applications. White metals are materials for plain bearings that have a low hardness and compressive strength. Typically, these  Plain bearing materials cast in a thin layer with a support shell made of steel.

If you would like to find out more about bearing materials , please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to inform you about the different bearing materials. Both bronze and white metal are high-quality materials for plain bearings that help to protect the shaft in the event of damage. They are indispensable for the proper functioning of the plain bearing and play a key role in ensuring that work processes run smoothly. Unlike a rolling bearing, there is no direct contact between two parts. Ideally, a plain bearing can therefore have a very long service life.
